It’s a Work in Progress ( Under Construction)
I have invested a great deal of time to research all of the elements that go into a project like elderorphan.org. However as I move forward and it all begins to congeal I realize that there are numerous pieces that still need attention. I believe that I have conducted enough testing of the critical elements to ensure that nothing will blow up, but there is plenty left to deal with. I’m committed to tightening everything so please be patient.
I’m a Canadian
I reside in Ontario, Canada and as Canadians we feel obligated to apologize for everything. My spelling checker likes the English spelling of words like colour, labour and neighbour. You can use whatever you like in your comments and posts but I’ll stick with mine.
Differences in Legal/Political Jurisdictions
I have discovered that although they are generally similar in intent, there can be important variations in the laws of any particular jurisdiction. For instance, the difference in laws regarding wills, marriage and divorce in the provinces and territories in Canada might surprise you. My personal experience is limited to the Province of Ontario and I would caution anyone who is contemplating marriage, divorce or moving to another jurisdiction to make sure that they do the necessary research to ensure that the intention of their wills will endure the change. My understanding is that this holds true in the USA as well.
There was a time long, long ago when the Internet was in its infancy and almost everyone played nice. Visitors to most sites were not required to endure the aggravation of dealing with a captcha or even registering before posting a comment to a blog or posting an idea to a forum. Unfortunately those days are gone and now to keep everything clean, visitors will encounter these measures in order to participate. Without some protective measures in place, the site would soon be flooded with all manner of unwanted content. As evidence of this, within hours of putting up this web site for testing before launch I was already attracting spam in the Comments and probably only minutes after I created the email@example.com email address the first spam e-mail arrived.
The spam catchers and protective measures that are available to a blogger are becoming much more sophisticated and my goal is to implement and test the most innocuous strategies and hope that I will never need to resort to the more obtrusive measures.
Unfortunately when you submit a comment you will be asked to include your e-mail address. It is not published for viewing by visitors and it is not captured and retained anywhere in a database. Your comment will be immediately forwarded to a moderator to approve it and see that it is published. The good news is that there is no need to register to comment or to view anything on the site.
As I write this I am working on the details of the implementation on the Forum. There again you are able to view everything. However you will be required to register with a name and an e-mail address in case we need to contact you. And again your e-mail address will not be made public to visitors of the site.
I think that it was about 14 years ago when I came up with the idea for elderorphan.org and I began to search for some suitable elements to include in the web site design. The image that you see at the top of the page seemed to capture the theme and mood of the web site; the tranquil blues, the autumn mood with the leaves falling from the trees in a breeze. I added the person on the bench deep in contemplation of what is on the horizon. It has lived in my file all these years. I would be happy to give credit to whoever crafted the image, but sorry if I had to remove it.
There will likely be many more apologies before there are none!
